"Plug in and hit Record" - a lie
Patrick bought this, I have to learn to use it (I am his wife). More complicated then video describing it. I would be happy to send it back. I have spent hours at the computer. Not worth the time and effort.
I would not buy this product again.
The instructions are far to complicated. Never could get it to work.
High Hopes
I was able to install the Audacity software and hook up the cassette player. Unfortunately, the cassette player is of very poor quality. When the songs are played back, there is very noticeable dragging. Its not the tape because it plays fine in my Sony cassette player. Ill keep looking.

Great in concept, in practice - no
We had several older cassettes that were speeches/presentations made by family members, and were afraid the quality was going to deteriorate over time.
Digitizing them made a lot of sense, and we wanted to control what was recorded and what could be eliminated, so we did not want to send them out to a service.
We did want to keep expenses down, and since there were only a few tapes did not want to spend an arm and a leg on equipment. The MP3 converter made a lot of sense and the actual process was very straightforward and simple. The inclusion of Audacity software was a plus, and perhaps with a great deal more work we could have cleaned up the sound, but to be honest the digital version of test tape was very noisy and "hissy". Because two of the other tapes were important we may have to go to a third party service that has more expertise and can also clean up the tapes.
Since the process is so simple, I would recommend to a friend,but only if the sound quality does need need to be crystal clear. Music ma

Why do I have to have a magnifying glass, just to read manual, Extremely confusing. I hope to eventually figure this out.

Great that this product is still being produced...very difficult to find one. I have large CD collection. The first one delivered had very little sound; a new one was forwarded to me immediately.

I bought this to convert about 500 tapes to mp3. After dubbing the first 10, it seems to be doing a fine job, recording quality wise. Well see how it holds up over the long haul.
The converter shipped with a CD with the Audacity software, which always needs to be in the disc drive when Im exporting (but not recording) files. A minor annoyance for me, but might be more problematic for some users.
Controls are old school, no frills.

Not As Simple As It Looks
I bought this for my husband at his request for his birthday in mid-June. He was very enthusiastic to receive it, but stated that the instructions are complicated, and the options seem more suited for a music producer/engineer than an audiophile. He used it for a few days, then put it aside and it is gathering dust now.
Works, but complicated for me
I purchased this to convert precious tapes to either CD or MP3. They are music tapes. This is going to take some time for me to figure out. So I did a quick tryout. It recorded as promised. I just need to figure out how to label the songs, etc, so I know what Im listening to. I hated to give it only 3 stars, but I havent had a chance to really use it because its going to take some time and patience, which I dont have much of.

This is a great product after you have gotten through the somewhat complicated and time consuming set up instructions. I am still not sure if I completed the set up correctly, but will give it a try. I have quite a few cassettes and I think this product will help in terms of downsizing my music collection.

Very effective for a plastic player
I was impressed with how well my tapes turned into decent mp3s. It was a bit tricky for a dinosaur like me, but i think that others will have no problems with the controls. Like others before me Im not sure how long this device will last without breaking, but as long as it works, Im more than satisfied!
Finally get to throw out my old cassettes!
Once I got it connected, it was easy to use. I was never able to find the exact interface connection on my computer, that was described in the instructions, but it worked on an alternate setting...
Convert cassette tapes to itunes easily
I had tried another type of media transfer and was disappointed with the bulky machine and the poor outcome. This was so easy and really was as easy as promised. The tapes were quickly transferred to mp3 format and stored in my iTunes library. Really loved the options offered of inserting my own breaks or letting them auto insert. We did both music tapes and tapes from sermons at church and they all turned out great. It is wonderful to be able to listen to material we had cherished but were not able to get in any way except to reproduce it ourselves. A great experience with this machine. The only thing that was missing was an option to transfer at "double time" instead of having to play the tape at regular speed. I would absolutely order this product again.
poor interface with required software
The included software was outdated. To download latest version and other required items was way too complicated and would not complete even after numerous tries. The software site is cumbersome and confusing.
The actual converter might be functioning well, but not without the software.
The recorder is exactly what I wanted.
I use it to listen to my old cassettes. Also to transfer the music to MP-3 and CD. Works great once you get you get set up. Would like to be able to connect through my tuner / stereo system. There must be a way just havent figured how to connect it . Its light weight and works well .
not what I expected
I was planning on using this to record cassettes to my computer, MP3. The instructions are vague and complicated. I could not get it to record properly, so I will probably return it for a refund.
Effective cassette to MP3 converter.
A very basic cassette player, lots of plastic parts, not sure how long it will hold up. The USB connection is useful, could have probably accomplished the same with headphone jack connected to audio input to computer. The Audacity software is the key component for this item. The product worked as advertised. I did have some old tapes that didnt hold up over the years, better hurry up and get them converted before theyre gone for good.
Had a bad one. Started out OK, though.
Your software needs updating. I never quite understood Audacity. It was well named, but I never could master it and I pride myself as a software pro. But I gave up on Audacity years ago.
What happened is after awhile, the cassette tape kept slowing down. By the time my voice sounding like what youd expect from the abominable snowman ... Well, that was it for me. Is there any way I can do this using Adobe Audition?
Very happy with the product
I had to convert very rare material on Cassette to MP3 and this did the job very efficiently. Initially I had some problem with the tape being caught in the mechanism, but as it warmed up and I fast forwarded a couple of times, the problem went away.
Okay to use, but poor sound quality
The device was easy to use, but I found the quality of the sound to be poor. There is almost always a constant hiss in the transfer. It transfers commercially produced cassettes better than any cassette copied from a LP. Even saying this, much of the music, especially any string instrument -- guitar, violin, etc., sounded tinny. I was using this with a MacBook. I dont know if this problem is with the design, or that is just hard to convert old tape to good sounding digital files.
Great Clutter Buster
Once I got it working it worked well. Very hard to figure out the set up. The instructions described settings that were not an option. Nice to have my old cassette tapes now in digital form.

Better Than Advertised
Better than i thought it would be because the product description only mentions ending up with mp3 files. But if you know Audacity, then you know you can export as any file format you want...wav, aiff, or mp3. Which is good if you want to save and edit a better quality file.
It comes with a disc of Audacity 2.0.3, which is a free download anyway from the Audacity site. But I guess its nice to have the disc.
Audacity has poor Instruction Manuals and is NOT user friend
After a couple hours trying to record and play a simple audio recording I am really unhappy with this product. It may be a good product but the set-up has too many steps, the instruction booklet requires a magnifying glass (and even then the tiny images are crude), and there is no help by phone or email or chat.
Dont Bother
This product is horrible. Cheap manufacturing at its best. The cover would not close and it plays tapes back at different speeds so it impacts your conversion. Save your money buy another product.
Product Delivers- But it;s not Easy
I use the product for its intended purpose - to convert old audio tapes to digital files. It works for that, and the instructions are actually comprehensive and understandable. But there are a couple challenges: Installing the product and then using it is quite time-consuming and cumbersome. I could not get one or two things to wrk as I wished and, after a number of calls to Customer Service, I did get a return call and was given a good workaround. That said, I had previously ordered two other products for this same purpose and neither did what was advertised - this one does, and thats not bad.
Disgraceful
Sharper image should be embarrassed to sell this item. The software is old and does not work with Windows 8. The manual is out of date.
Saving old cassettes
The quality of reproducing my old cassettes was not good. They were probably too old for quality reproducing them. It might be better for other uses.

It works as it is supposed: make digital files from a cassette. But it is so poorly and cheaply constructed i have major doubts as to how long it will work, or before it breaks somewhere.

Im afraid I had a few problems
I used the software sent with years ago when it first came out. It wasnt simple them, and it isnt now. I never used its speed control (only in an emergency). Therefore I was unfamiliar with it, because the tape being dubbed slowed down to a ridiculous speed that was unacceptable. Thats where I stopped using it.
Basically works well
I already had Audacity (older program) on a computer and this just plugged in and worked immediately.
Simple.
Cannot tell on durability yet as Ive only had it about 2 weeks and recorded about 8 tapes. No problems yet.
Everything I have been looking for in a cassette converter
I have been looking for this quality and price in a cassette converter for a long time. In the past, all units were hundreds of dollars with huge footprints. This unit is as compact as it can get. The instructions were clear for a novice. Once the software is installed, remember to reboot to have all the functions become visible. What a relief to get old cassette tapes converted.

I have hundreds of cassettes, love that I can convert them! Only down side is you have to play entire tape to convert (unlike ripping a CD).
Decent way to record precious cassettes
I purchased the product to record 30 year old cassettes before I wore them out. I didnt want to lose my precious music, which Im not sure I can replace.
I would have given it five stars if Id had a chance to really get into using it. I did a very quick tryout using the quick record brochure that came with it. I couldnt find the choices in the set up on my computer and was confused, but what I did select did work and I did a quick record of one side of a tape. I didnt save it because I need to read the manual and do this right. But Im very hopeful. It isnt quite as user friendly as I would have hoped, but what little I did try, worked pretty well and sounded good.

I have hundreds of tapes from the 80s that I am now able to covert to mp3 and listen to on my iPod. Very easy to use and set up, just a little time consuming converting since you have to listen to the tape while it records on to Audacity then create each track, but its well worth it.

Can not get it to work the software does not provide the correct stuff to download. I removed the software as indicated on the directions and redownload it serveral times, also download off the internet still does not work
Cassette to MP3 Converter
I like it enough to right a review so I can get $10 off the purchase of another one. Its light, easy to use, but a bit fragile. I rewound a tape in it and the rewind button didnt release. I didnt realize that and let it sit there til the batteries discharged. The result was a slight increase in the play speed, which could be easily corrected with the Audacity software with a single preference setting. Its inexpensive enough to have several, so I dont have to carry it around from place to place.
Disappointed
The product was not as user friendly as advertised. The directions were incredibly difficult to follow. I cant even get the thing to work. It sits on my desk as a worthless piece of junk.
It works, but it helps to be techy
First thing: the product works. Thats what is most important. But I am not technically inclined, and the instruction booklet that comes with this is really FAT and has dozens of instructions with, to their credit, photos accompanying the instructions, but it took me a really long time to get thru them all and instruction fatigue definitely set in early. Glad it finally worked!!!
Cassette to MP3 Converter
Most of the tapes I tried to play dragged to the point that they couldnt be saved to mp3.
Didnt get far.
The easiest function was installing the software. After that, it all went down hill for me. I could not understand the complicated instructions, much less read the very tiny print. I even downloaded online videos from those who owned this and still was having difficulty. I am usually pretty good at reading the manual. This is the first time that after 30 minutes of getting nowhere that I decided to just hang it up and read the return shipping instructions. Had to pay out of pocket to return item, they dont offer a RMA label. I will just have to find another product that will do this for me or pay an outside service.

Cheap Product!
This particular device is really cheaply built. The cassette door does not close, because the the cassettes doesnt fit firmly into place. Unless I received a damaged device, I would not recommend this to anyone. Very disappointed!

I owned an older version of this machine, the newer old model is much better. I recorded sound quality is great and the software is easy to use and install. So far, I have covert three cassette into MP3 files with very results. This a much better product than the older version.

Just what Ive been looking for
Been searching for a cassette-2-mp3 for some time now. Easy to set up - but the instructions can be overwhelming. Also has plenty of features for the power-user (individual tracks, etc), but simple enough to transfer each side of a cassette to an MP3 for people like me.
Not easy to operate
The directions are hard to understand. Especially for mac users.
Totally Surprised
Cant begin to say how great this recorder is. Easy to operate and makes quality MP3 recordings. The program that comes with it, although easy to install, is filled with many options on how to fix bad or crackly recordings. Much more advanced than I expected. Wonderful product!

Defective Item
I will be sending this item back ASAP. It is poor quality .For the price and what I need it for I will get a replacement.The play button will not stay engaged so that makes it useless.Also it makes a noisy clicking sound.
"Tinny" works well, but complicated
Besides using it as a player, I would only record tapes that were very dear to me. Otherwise too complicated and time consuming for the average user. could have been made sturdier, more durable. Does not invite constant use for fear of damaging. Overall it is a good product. didnt like though that after all effort, recordings may not all work in all players? I purchased it myself.
gets the job done
great for preserving those old cassette tapes. We had our wedding vows on tape and converted to a thumb drive.
Worked the first time...
Pros: Basically plug and play. Worked with the software without any problem. I was able to play and record my cassette tape into the software easily.
Cons: For some reason though, the sound on my computer was disabled during installation. There might be a compatibility issue there.

Love this product
This item was great. I just plugged it into the computer and it found all the pictures on my computer. I now keep the USB device in a fire proof safe and have back up no matter what happens.
It Works!!
I use the product to save sermons recorded on tape. The main issue is finding the right place on the tape to record from. The software works great. Recordings are clear. I had to download the update for the software to use the latest features. It took a couple of times to get it right as some of the helping software needed to be upgraded, too.
The tape recorder broke after a few uses. However, Sharper Image relaed it with no hassle.

Good but difficult to set up
Difficult to figure out how to title each song to make it a separate item instead of the whole tape.
Not totally sold, troubles with sound and files on computer.
I have 100s of great music on cassettes and would like to store it on my computer and make CDs along with storing a MP3 player. The door however keeps opening because the clasp are flimsy. Still trying to figure out why theres no sound and cant locate the downloaded files. All in All I have been looking for one and will make it do what its suppose to do.
New life for old songs
The sound i heard while the tape was playing was not as good as it was recorded. Very satisfied with the results of the recordings.

Before video cameras, we used cassette tapes to record important events. I had been looking for a way to convert them to CDs. This little machine was just what I was looking for…..easy to use (once my grandson helped me figure it out!) I was able to set tracks for easier listening. Worked perfectly. Now our precious memories are preserved for a lifetime.
Truth in advertising!
This is exactly what I needed to transfer old cassettes to a digital (MP3) format. The player itself is compact - reminds me of my old Walkman (remember those?). I dont know how durable it is because it is still new. The Audacity program which accompanies the converter is easy to use - practically intuitive which from me is saying a lot because I am a senior in my late 60s and not a computer kid.

Pretty Decent Product
Most of what youre paying for is the software I assume because the Walkman is really cheaply made. That being said, it works great. The instructions on setting up the software with the device were easy to follow and the software is intuitive enough to tell when the tape has reached the end of one side, so it automatically pauses the recording. All in all, a good product for converting tapes to wav.

There are several steps to make this compatible to my hp computer. These steps are not cut and dry. I will attempt to go though this again,
otherwise, I will return as I cannot get it downloaded on my system. I do not want to go
through this each time I use this. I wanted an

Cool little gadget - definitely worth the price
I have a large music recording collection, mainly on records and cassettes. I needed to consolidate thousands of songs on several hundreds of tapes. When I found this gadget, I was very intrigued and happy. And it performs as specified to the letter. It is trivially easy to operate, produces excellent quality recordings and uses a powerful, yet easy to use Audacity 2.0 software on my PC that allows me to clean all the noise, cracks and humms from the "old" analog days. And it does not use too many batteries at all!
A perfect gift for myself for this Christmas. It will take me months to finish my conversion to .mp3 job, but I completely recommend it. Go for it!
Poor quality, difficult to use
I returned this. Its poor quality; I had to hold down the buttons for them to continue working, and it ultimately didnt record correctly with Audacity.
